Every year, Salone del Mobile provides the definitive roadmap for the future of interiors. Andy Thornton attended this year to get a first look at new products and innovations, cement partnerships and foster new relationships which will help set us apart for the upcoming year. With any event like this the main thing on everyone’s minds is – what are the latest trends and how will they impact the way the hospitality sector looks and feels?

We are happy to say we were not disappointed with the trends. From material fusion to bright colours and adaptable designs, the 2026 trends are looking bold, bright and sophisticated.

The Fusion of Materials

The standout theme of Milan 2026 is the unexpected pairing of finishes, some designers are moving away from monochromatic uniformity in favour of material layering. This is seen in high-gloss surfaces paired with anodized matte finishes, ceramic bases used for soft poufs, and turned table bases intricately wrapped in cane. Even industrial metal frames are being softened with rope accents.

Most impressively, we are seeing the beautiful combination of porcelain or ceramic with timber. Fusing these elements is an incredibly difficult technical process. Achieving a seamless bond between them requires masterful engineering and precision joinery. Despite the complexity, the result is visually stunning—the organic, warm grain of the wood provides a perfect foil to the cool, clinical, and often patterned elegance of the stone-like surfaces.

These multi-material pieces offer a high-end, custom look without the price tag of bespoke commissions. The use of hard-wearing materials like ceramic and anodized metal in high-contact areas ensures the furniture remains durable and easy to maintain in busy environments.

This trend creates a rich sensory experience. Guests are increasingly drawn to touchable environments, and the contrast between a cool ceramic base and a warm fabric seat or a sleek gloss table and a textured cane wrap makes a space feel curated, thoughtful, and premium.

Adaptable and Size-Changing Tables

As hospitality spaces continue to serve multiple functions from breakfast hubs to evening work zones and dining spots the furniture is evolving to keep up. The 2026 fair put a spotlight on adaptable tables that feature extendable mechanisms or modular designs.

Versatility is the ultimate ROI and Milan seemed to understand this. An adaptable table allows a single space to transition from a two-person breakfast spot to a large communal working table or an evening banquet setting with minimal effort from the staff and no need for additional storage.

Guests today expect spaces that adapt to their needs. Whether they are a solo traveller needing a small corner to work or a large group celebrating with a meal, adaptable furniture ensures that the space always feels right-sized for their specific party, never cramped or overly exposed.

Blown Glass and Transparent Surfaces

The weight of furniture is being redistributed through the use of blown glass for table tops and side tables. This trend adds a sense of airy luxury that contrasts beautifully with the heavier, chunkier furniture trends seen elsewhere.

Glass surfaces are incredibly easy to sanitise and maintain, making them ideal for high-turnover hospitality settings. They also help small boutique spaces feel much larger by maintaining clear sightlines across the room.

At Salone there is a sense of quiet luxury in the glass. It feels sophisticated and clean. For a guest, a blown-glass side table feels like a piece of art rather than just a functional object and Salone captured this perfectly. This addition would certainly increase a guest’s perception of the hotel or restaurant's quality.

A standout design detail this year is the \"folding over\" geometry, a technique where surfaces appear to be draped or bent like fabric rather than cut and joined. These wrapped lines create chairs that look less like assembled parts and more like singular, sculptural forms. This trend moves away from the rigid, boxy minimalism, opting instead for a wrapped aesthetic that feels soft yet incredibly structured.

Beyond the striking visual appeal, these folded finishes provide a distinct structural advantage. Sharp, 90-degree corners can be prone to chipping or snagging. By utilising wrapped edges, manufacturers have created pieces that are inherently more durable against the rigors of high-traffic use, while the sculptural nature of the pieces serves as functional art.

The absence of harsh angles creates a soft environment that feels instinctively more approachable and relaxing. A guest feels physically supported and psychologically at ease, they are naturally inclined to linger longer, improving the overall experience and encouraging extended stays in the space.

Sculptural Forms

Chairs were certainly showing their capability to take centre stage at Salone 2026. The trend for chairs was about making them the main star of a hospitality setting rather than just a practical product. From impressively large and chunky designs to vibrant bold colours chairs were making themselves known. One style that stood out for us was the spilt back chair.

These designs provide better airflow and a sense of personal space. The split-back detail offers a modern aesthetic that feels less restrictive than traditional solid-back chairs, making long dinners or lounge stays more comfortable and the room effortlessly stylish.
