The Laundry

An impressive makeover for this historic building, complemented by classic Bentwood seating and bespoke tables.

The Laundry is a new all-day neighbourhood bistro and bar destination, located on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton. The iconic Walton Lodge building, in classic Edwardian style, had been a commercial laundry for 119 years, but has now had a complete overhaul.

The impressive makeover, overseen by interior designers 3Stories, has been inspired by, and is in part to honour, the building’s historic past. It is described as “a mix of old-world authenticity laced with new world spirit.” Much of the furniture for the venue was sourced from contract furniture supplier Andy Thornton.

Through the industrial-style steel double entrance doors of the ground floor, the bar is straight in front, with casual high dining/drinking either side. Bentwood bar stools from Andy Thornton, stained dark walnut and upholstered in dark brown leather, are used extensively in this area, fronting the bar counter and alongside the drink shelves. This busy informal area functions as a coffee bar during the day and wine bar in the evening.

To one side of the bar, there is a more formal bistro dining area with banquette seating and assorted tables and chairs. Here Andy Thornton supplied their Paris bentwood side chair in standard walnut finish, upholstered in a pale jade green leather, together with white marble table tops on cast iron bistro bases. The furniture really complements the pared-back feel of the room, with its bare red brick walls and rustic timber flooring.

Upstairs is cosy and you’re close to your neighbours but there's a great vibe too. Inside they've kept some original art/books from the original laundry and the walls remain largely the same too.

Downstairs in the basement, there's a larger space that acts as an overflow dining room or can be hired out for private functions. This is a surprisingly bright room as it gets some daylight through the glass paving tiles above, casting shadows onto the oak parquet flooring.

Here Andy Thornton supplied more Paris side chairs, in a mix of pale jade green and dark brown leathers. They also supplied two bespoke tables, each with chunky 1700 x 900 mm solid oak tops on specially adapted cast iron bases, which can either be used individually or butted together as here to form one large table.

There is also a large south-facing outdoor terrace, perfect for a bite to eat, glass of wine and people-watching. Andy Thornton supplied the café furniture, white solid marble tops on cast iron bistro tables specially treated for outdoor use. The chairs are their stacking Café side chairs, in lightweight aluminium frames for strength, with black rattan-style lattice weave, together with rattan low stools.

The Laundry brings something new and unique to SW9’s already thriving restaurant scene, adding a fresh layer of gentrification to Coldharbour Lane. Great cooking, good vibes and a warm welcome make this a great addition to Brixton.
