Antique interior's journey from Victorian bar in Bootle to Irish pub in Pontefract

Andy Thornton’s antiques department undertook a remarkable salvage project when they sourced a complete Victorian pub interior from The Laburnum Hotel in Bootle, affectionally known locally as the ‘Blob House,’ by local dockworking patrons, sadly now closed and being converted into apartments. The bar, features an imposing curved counter with intricate art Nouveau-style stained glass and etched glass panels on an impressive overbar canopy.

The team carefully dismantled and preserved the bar front, tables, and glasswork, ensuring that this historic interior would not be lost. We rebuilt the bar in our workshops then delivered and handed over to the on-site contractors Togel to complete the installation and restoration on site in the Galway Girl, a newly opened Irish pub in Pontefract.

The circular economy of exceptional antique cabinets

These Victorian mahogany display cabinets were originally acquired by our Architectural Salvage department from a prestigious high-end jeweller in the late 1990s, shortly after, they found a new home in a Mayfair gallery in London.

Three decades later, they found their way back to us! The Mayfair gallery where they had been in use for thirty years was relocating and the gallery offered the cabinets back to us, still in fantastic condition.

They were expertly removed and transported by our skilled workmen to our West Yorkshire showrooms where they were rebuilt with a clean and polish and readied for resale. High-quality antique cabinetry such as this is very sought after, so it wasn't long before they were on their way again to another high-end retailer, this time Daniella Draper's flagship jewellery store in The Victoria Quarter in Leeds.

The cabinets now take pride of place in the store, perfectly complementing the luxurious and bespoke jewellery on display.

The Jib Door - Victorian tobacconist inspired interiors

The Jib Door is a dark and cosy wine bar that has been meticulously designed to the interior style of a 19th-century English shop, complete with a secret room.Over the course of a year, the walls were aged and the venue began its time travelling metamorphosis as it was transformed into a Victorian shop. Interior and decor elements were sourced far and wide from English auctions, European flea markets and of course from us at Andy Thornton.

As well as an assortment of pharmacy display cases we supplied the original pharmacy display bottles and jars to stock them with. This includes a wide variety of books and encyclopaedias along with other prints and memorabilia to add interest in every corner and on every wall. In a space like this, more is more and there are curiosities mounted on every available wall and cabinets brimming with vintage ephemera.

The Vines Pub in Liverpool Wins Historic England Conservation Award

Liverpool’s illustrious Edwardian gem, The Vines – affectionately known as \"The Big House\" – has recently been bestowed with the prestigious Historic England Conservation Award, courtesy of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

This accolade, part of CAMRA’s renowned Pub Design Awards, celebrates the finest examples of pub architecture, sensitive refurbishment, and the preservation of historic interiors. The Vines, a Grade II listed building, was lauded for its exceptional restoration, which has allowed this iconic piece of Liverpool’s heritage to be enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike once again.

Cabinet of Curiosities - Apothecary Antique Units

The antique apothecary units served as perfect showcases for the shop's handmade candles, soaps, and bath powders.

The carefully selected units not only offered functional display spaces but also became historical artifacts that captivated visitors. The team also used the antique units to display their new range of extraordinary gifts, inspired by the Cabinets of Curiosity or \"wonder-rooms\" of old, further enhancing the shop's charm and mystique.

Reclaimed and restored Smoker's Bow Chairs

A key addition to The Monro’s unique atmosphere is the inclusion of Smokers Bow armchairs, a classic British design that exudes timeless elegance. These chairs were sourced and restored by our antiques team, who sourced a number of these chairs for strengthening and restoration in our workshops. Similar to our work in The Hound Pub.

Using antique workbenches for retail display

All our antique workbenches are thoroughly restored, ensuring they're clean and ready for use. The original character will be preserved but any rough edges that could harm customers or the products will be smoothed out in our workshops, the structure will be inspected and secured and any unstable parts will be fixed prior to selling on, giving each workbench a new lease of life.

Using antique counters and decorative antiques to replicate heritage shops
