Houston Inn

Carol Ann Lever, Clever Design

The Houston Inn is an excellent example of a hospitality space designed and delivered on short notice with impressive end results.

A quick refresh in the time of COVID

Houston Inn is an award-winning pub in the heart of Scotland that just completed a brand new refurbishment, outside and in. This welcoming, family-friendly venue for drinks and dining just got even more inviting with a contemporary new look. Light, bright and airy interiors combine with wide glass panel doors that open the restaurant to the garden space to really bring the outside in.

The turnaround on this project was tight so that The Houston Inn could undergo a refresh while closed due to COVID restrictions. For this reason, Carol Ann Lever of Clever Design needed to specify products with a short lead time, but with some astute design details, she has achieved a truly ravishing scheme.

Reimagining pub furniture with a RAL

The Worth Side Chair with its simple wooden frame is a staple style of many pub and restaurant dining areas and for a product that requires upholstery, it has a remarkably short lead time. It could be seen as a traditional choice to meet project deadlines, but by choosing to finish it in Light Grey RAL 7035 rather than a wood coloured stain the designer has made all the difference. Suddenly the chair is infinitely more contemporary and in keeping with the light aesthetic of the interior scheme.

Further to this, half of the seat pads are upholstered in Panaz Tan 801, a traditional tone in pub furniture, while an equal amount are adorned with 131 Azure, a striking almost oceanic shade which gives the pub an almost Mediterranean feel and matches other features throughout.

From sun-catcher to eye-catcher

The Houston Inn's garden is a well-known sun trap, and now thanks to its new look it catches the eye as well as the sun's rays.

Below the leafy pergolas, sits our classic Terrace collection with tables and chairs made from hard-wearing Robinia with steel frames in a black painted finish. They are accompanied by the more modern & boxy Garda high tables and poseur height stools, which gives a variety of seating options outdoors.

We recommend that hardwood slats are treated regularly with a suitable teak oil so they can retain their excellent appearance outside for the maximum time. The Terrace collection features foldable furniture, so it can be collapsed and stored in the winter months.

Farmhouse oak impersonated

Solid ash table tops with a light oak stain pair with cast iron inox table bases giving a light country kitchen feel on top, with a solid foundation below. Oak stains on ash tops are popular in many hospitality spaces, because they give the look and feel of solid oak at a more cost-effective price.
