Harcourt Inns

To overhaul this cavernous 17th-century building, interior designer Liana Braune specified all the dining and bar furniture, and much of the lighting, from Andy Thornton.


The Crown, on Chiswick High Road, is the latest site from London pub group Harcourt Inns, led by chef-proprietor Henry Harris and partner James McCulloch. This imposing 17th-century building, fronted by Victorian railings, was once the site of the town’s police station, with attached stables for police horses. It has been given a new lease of life and now offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu from head chef Daniele Zaffora.


The cavernous space has received a total overhaul by Liana Braune, Creative Director of Zaffera London, an interior design and art curation studio. Liana has overseen the design of the group’s three other London sites: the Hero of Maida, Three Cranes and The Coach. She specified all the dining and bar furniture, plus much of the decorative lighting, from contract furnishings specialist Andy Thornton Ltd.


Entering up a few steps though the impressive front door, you reach the spacious bar area. Here, we supplied the Bentwood bar stools that front the three sides of the mosaic-tiled bar counter. These have been stained dark chocolate brown to contrast the light-grey tiles and light-oak parquet flooring and upholstered in dark blue leather. Also in the bar area are five brass-topped poseur tables complete with bar stools, which provide ample seating for informal bar-snack dining.


The restaurant dining area features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a covered courtyard. Here we supplied all the loose furniture. Contemporary Arabella side chairs face the blue leather banquette seating with tasteful modern art along the length of the wall. The dark-stained beech frames are upholstered in high-quality Crest leather, in a mix of light and dark blues and greens. The tables are four-legged cast iron Bistro tables with dark-stained character oak table tops.

Arabella armchairs are paired with Bistro tables with solid Cararra marble tops. Above these hang Andy Thornton Florence pendants with retro filament light bulbs.


The Crown is a well-located site and a project that is especially dear to Henry Harris, who has been a local for 21 years. It is a professionally put-together package that should be a big hit with Chiswick’s well-heeled yet fairly conservative market. Incidentally, Harcourt Inns has been named Food-led Pub Company of the Year at last year’s Restaurant Magazines R200 Awards.
