INNOVATIVE URBAN WORKSPACE
Kommune is an innovative all-day dining experience housed on one floor of Castle House, a unique Grade ll-listed, urban workspace and social hub, right at the heart of Sheffield’s old city centre. It brings together many acclaimed, local independent kitchens, artisan bakers, baristas, craft brewers, art studios and design-led retailers. Much of the furniture for the communal dining and bar areas was sourced from Andy Thornton Ltd.
RETAINING THE ORIGINAL FEATURES
Architects and interior designers Just H Architects were briefed by developers Kollider Projects, to refurbish and restore the former 1960s department store to a stylish and contemporary mixed-use space, retaining as much of the building’s existing fabric as possible.
SCANDI-INSPIRED DINING HALL
The main dining hall of this 16,000 sq ft Scandi-inspired dining hall includes almost 300 School side chairs and bar stools from the hugely popular Andy Thornton Vintage Style range. The area is split into two distinct areas, high dining in the central area, featuring bar stools around refectory-style poseur tables, with standard side chairs and refectory tables around the glazed perimeter.
STYLISH CIRCULAR BAR
More bar stools have been used in front of the stylish new circular bar at the Department of Drinks, with its timber slatted counter frontage and zinc bar top. The bar, featuring an impressive line-up of artisan beers, superb cocktails and wines from around the world, wraps carefully round the iconic listed staircase at the heart of the building.
We also provided the high dining bar stools in front of Baked in Brick, the Neapolitan-style street food pizzeria, with its wood-fired ovens.
For the lower window seating area, with floor-to-ceiling views along Castle Street and Angel Street, we supplied stylish Babila armchairs and side chairs, in a mix of black, white and sand polypropylene shells.
