Still overloaded with ideas after 40 years.
Andy Thornton Ltd was formed in 1975 by ambitious young entrepreneurs Andy and Kate Thornton, when purely by chance they got involved in supplying architectural salvage to restaurateurs and bar owners in America, who loved the nostalgic British look. The couple had travelled the world for four years in a camper van and were now ready to settle down and establish a business.
It all took off when they returned to the UK, purchased a derelict farmhouse with extensive outbuildings in Calderdale and began sourcing architectural antiques from redundant buildings in northern towns and cities. The company Andy Thornton Ltd was born.
2005 saw a management buy-out when Andy, Kate and the other two Directors sold the business to the five existing Associate Directors. The new management team included Charles Tolley, who is now the company’s Managing Director. Purchasing Director is David Hastie and the Financial Director is Jonathan Penford. Our Sales Director is Keith Walker.
The current board remains focused on taking the company from strength to strength, which in 2012 included the sale of the joinery projects division, allowing the existing company to develop our extensive product range to an international market.
A truly global company, we sell direct to customers all over the world.
The very first Andy Thornton catalogue back in 1982 was a mere leaflet of a few items. The latest incarnation was Catalogue 18, with 500 pages packed full of our latest products, including furniture and lighting, wood carvings, metal fittings, accessories and a few tasters from our unique collection of architectural antiques.
The very first Andy Thornton website went live in 1999. After a couple of colourful incarnations, we returned to our original heritage green and the summer of 2010 saw www.andythornton.com become an e-commerce site. We now have over 5,000 products available to buy online.
We acquired our flagship Showroom, Victoria Mills, in 1990 and it quickly became a vital part of the company. Home to displays of Andy Thornton contract furniture, lighting and our unique collection of architectural antiques and salvage, more recently Victoria Mills underwent an exciting redevelopment, including new room sets and a substantial retail display room, with eateries, shops and a wine bar on the lower level.
2012 saw the launch of one of our most successful ranges ever, our vintage-style collections bringing the industrial look to bars, restaurants and retail stores ranging from River Island to Barbour and Fat Face. Our high-quality decorative tin tiles have been used to clad bars, walls and ceilings by big name brands, from Coca-Cola to TGI Friday's.
2015 saw the company celebrating 40 years in business and since then we continue to go from strength to strength.
As for the future? We're always looking for new, exciting and unique products to keep our customers coming back for more.
