CARE & MAINTENANCE
METALWORK - BRASS AND CHROME
-
Polished brass or copper work should be polished daily using a proprietary metal polish eg. Brasso, to prevent tarnishing.
-
Polished metalwork with a lacquer finish eg light fittings, should be cleaned occasionally with a mild detergent. On no account should a metal polish be used, as this will destroy the lacquer finish.
- Internal painted metalwork should be washed periodically with a mild detergent.
- External painted metalwork should be washed very thoroughly or pressure washed at least once a year.
- Chrome and satin chrome should be wiped with a damp cloth and use a good quality wax polish. Never use abrasive cleaning agents. Excessive cleaning will eventually reveal the metal core.
- Special finishes - Bronze, Verdi Gris, Antique Brass, etc should be wiped with a damp cloth and a good quality wax polish should be used.
METALWORK – STAINLESS STEEL
-
A cleaning schedule is essential, not only to maintain appearance, but more importantly to preserve corrosion resistance; stainless steel needs to be clean to self-renew its special surface properties.
-
Prevent the accumulation of dirt. A regular wash with warm water and mild detergent (such as car shampoo) followed by a clean water rinse is sufficient. Done diligently, this is all the maintenance required.
-
If dirt and staining has become established, then a mild non-scratching abrasive powder such as a household cleaner (not bleach or chlorine based) can be used. Apply with bristle brush and wash off with lots of clean water.
-
Fingerprints and grease marks can be removed with glass cleaner or washing soda. Again, rinse thoroughly. The proprietary “E-Cloth” is recommended to restore an unmarked appearance to stainless steel. Baby oil or WD40 spray can also be used.
-
Many proprietary stainless steel cleaners are available that will do all of the above and leave a protective film on the surface.
-
Small scratches and stubborn stains can be removed with 3M Scotch-Brite or similar non-metallic scouring pads rubbed “along the grain” DO NOT use steel wool or Brillo pads, which leave particles that will rust.
