Mumbai Cricket Academy Bowled Over by Elland Fit-Out Firm

Andy Thornton has just been awarded contracts worth over £1 million in international interior fit-outs. Andy Thornton will design and fit-out the public areas of the new Mumbai Cricket Academy in India, and also design and fit-out five themed bars near Ciutadella, Menorca.

The local firm secured the Mumbai Cricket Academy contract after a major Indian construction company visited the Andy Thornton website. Impressed with what they saw, they sought out the West Yorkshire company to undertake this unique and extensive project.

Andy Thornton will design and fit-out the Cricket Academy’s bar area, coffee shop, spectacular hexagonal lounge and reception area, large banqueting hall and two contemporary restaurants. They will supply all furniture, lighting, floor coverings, curtains, soft furnishings, as well as elaborate architectural antique pieces from their Products Division. Stunning feature ceilings, including a six-metre-high carved wooden piece, created by Thornton’s in-house joinery team, and two stained glass ceiling domes in the banqueting hall, will create a spectacular finishing touch.

For the bar area, Andy Thornton will use their expertise to create traditional, opulent Victorian décor, with an impressive dark mahogany bar, panelled counter and mirrored back bar; the central mirror will be etched with an Indian cricket game scene in keeping with the building’s use. Traditional furniture and booth seating will be complemented by traditional cricket artwork and memorabilia from Andy Thornton’s vast stock of themed décor.

Work is starting now in Andy Thornton’s workshop, due to commence on site in January 2008 with the handover date set for 15 April 2008.

The Menorca project consists of five individually themed bars in a holiday resort near Ciutadella. Andy Thornton has designed the interior and exterior of each bar including furniture, lighting, artwork and 3D themed accessories. Thornton’s joiners will be going to site before Christmas, with the opening of the complex set for summer 2008.

As well as showcasing Andy Thornton’s large range of hospitality furniture and lighting, the contracts will add to their already impressive portfolio of international interior fit-out projects.

Andy Thornton’s Managing Director, Peter Siddall, said, “It’s fantastic to be associated with such prestigious international projects and with the Cricket World Cup scheduled to be held in India in 2010, we hope to be involved with other projects in that country.”
