Andy Thornton and Alf & Werner
International interior fit-out contractors Andy Thornton have just completed an impressive refurbishment at Alf & Werner in Stavanger, Norway. One of the oldest buildings on the quay side in Stavanger, the site is on the opposite side of the main harbour. The ground floor was a wet fish shop prior to our clients taking over the site. As part of the development, the old building was substantially restored and modernised by the client. This work involved removing sections of the brick walls on the ground floor to create full height picture windows, a new wider staircase to provide access to all floors, new external timber boarding and a new roof.

The brief to Andy Thornton was to create a modern bar on a small, restrictive site which would make the most of the view out of the new windows of the harbour front but not an island bar in the middle of the floor. As the site is on the opposite side of the harbour, the clients wanted something special to draw the customers away from the main strip and over to the bar. They wanted a bar that would be talked about all over Norway. A bright pink exterior was even considered before deciding on a more subtle white which is in-keeping with its surroundings!
The original idea was to have a modern interior on both the ground and first floor. The clients then decided to opt for a slightly more traditional feel on the first floor.

Andy Thornton’s in-house design team produced a concept that featured an illuminated bar front and granite countertop for the ground floor bar. The back fitting features guilt framed mirrors with the silvering worn away so that you can see through the window behind. High level fixed seating booths with illuminated strips to the fixed table tops act as a divider between the bar standing area and seating area. The more traditional first floor bar features a classic Andy Thornton design – the copper-fronted bar. This is made from oak with medium oak stain finish. There is also a small stage area on the first floor for live music acts.
The Andy Thornton fit-out team manufactured and installed all of the interior joinery items at Alf & Werner. They also fitted the timber and tiled floors and completed decoration to walls and ceilings, including the cracked and flaking render effects to the walls on the ground floor. The team also undertook the tiling to the toilets. Decorative lighting was also supplied by Andy Thornton for the clients’ electricians to fit to add the perfect finishing touch.

The client is delighted with the work supplied by Andy Thornton and has asked the company to look at a further club area on the second floor which will be part of future developments to the site.
