The Royal Institution

In 1999 Sir Terry Farrell, of London-based architects Terry Farrell and Partners, won the commission to design and refurbish the interior of the Grade I listed Georgian building which has been home to The Royal Institution since 1799.

The Royal Institution of Great Britain is a unique and independent centre that celebrates all aspects of science. The ambitious £24m, two-year upgrade of its headquarters included maximising the useable space within the building and updating the interior including a day-lit atrium, heritage exhibitions and the café, bar and restaurant, all designed to leave visitors inspired and wanting to come back for more.

Sir Terry Farrell recommended Andy Thornton to the Royal Institution to add some contemporary and stylish furnishings to their new Time and Space café, restaurant and bar. As one of the UK’s leading furniture and lighting suppliers, Andy Thornton provided modern contemporary furniture and lighting to complement the renovations throughout the building.

Nancy armchairs, from Andy Thornton’s new furniture & lighting 2008 range, were upholstered in a warm grey fabric, to provide comfort and style in the impressive Cartier Room, matched with stainless steel table bases complete with solid beech table tops.

The ultra contemporary café features side chairs in bonded black leather, complemented by stainless steel table bases and matching table tops. A relaxing seating area is finished with a pair of three-seater sofas in durable and classic black leather.

For the restaurant and bar area, the Ri again wanted a very contemporary look to contrast with the original period features of the building. Andy Thornton sleek table tops and bases sit alongside bespoke large drum pendant lights in dramatic fuschia crepe satin, with contrasting ivory crepe satin lining.

The Royal Institution reopened in early September after two years of closure for refurbishment, to continue its mission of making science accessible to everyone.
