The Oval

This classical bandstand situated at the popular Oval Gardens, off the Queen's Promenade at Cliftonville, near Margate, Kent was supplied by the Metalwork Division of Andy Thornton Ltd from Elland, West Yorkshire.

Commissioned by the Regeneration Department of Thanet District Council, the six-metre diameter structure closely replicates the original Victorian bandstand that had long since been left in a state of neglect. Andy Thornton was able to design the bandstand around standard components from their vast range of architectural castings. These included cast aluminium columns, brackets and frieze panels to decorate the structural steel skeleton.

The elegant roof structure is clad in aluminium sheet, which was carefully finished to resemble a traditional lead roof. Its centrepiece is an attractive weather vane. The whole structure was protected from the elements with a powder coated paint finish to the galvanised steelwork in a special coastal specification.

The bandstand has proved a popular addition to the promenade and, since its completion, has provided the focal point for a number of memorable events.
