FAQs
Why are the gates not supplied in a painted condition?
Our products are very heavy and as such even with the upmost care and diligence it is quite conceivable that they will get scraped and scratched during installation and transportation. If the gates were supplied painted this would compromise the final finish. We therefore supply them with a zinc base primer and oil based undercoat ready for final painting after installation.
What type of paint should I use?
We recommend an appropriate long wearing, high quality latex or alkyd enamel top coat. This can be done by brushing, rolling or spraying. Care should be taken to follow the paint supplier's recommended guidelines.
Why do you offer both root fixing and plate gate posts?
We offer plate fixing posts for manual operation and for use with automation arms. The root fixing posts are suitable for use with underground automation systems as the motor can sit next to the post and the pivot point of the gate post is not compromised by the plate.
Why should I use cast iron products?
There are many reasons. Cast iron is a very durable material. Take a look at neglected examples of Victorian metalwork which still exist today. Buying cast iron is a long term purchase and will outlast mild steel every time. To restore the historic integrity of your project by using materials on a like for like basis, many Councils operate a grant scheme for such projects.
What are the origins of the Heritage Cast Iron designs?
In 1872, the company W Macfarlane & Co Ltd founded the famous Saracen Foundry in Glasgow. This became a huge iron works which sold iron castings all over the world, many as gates and railings for housing in the prosperous UK. Much of this fine ironwork was lost to the war effort, but the remainder is still going strong. Andy Thornton Ltd has spent years developing and commissioning faithful copies of many Macfarlane designs so that we are now able to offer a unique opportunity for householders and companies to restore their Victorian and Edwardian properties to original splendour. The original foundry techniques used to produce our exclusive range, ensure a level of quality that cannot be found anywhere else in the country.
