FAQs

How do I fit tin ceiling tiles?

Nail up tiles are designed to overlap. Each tile has a series of dimples around the edge to aid alignment. These dimples nest one above the other so that corners will have four thicknesses. The nails ATBATCBN should be driven through the dimples into wood grounds previously attached to the ceiling. A 1.5mm pilot drill may be useful. Disguise the overlaps by arranging them away from the light.

Always wear heavy gloves when handling these tiles.

The overall size of nail up tiles is approximately1235 x 625mm. The effective size, because of the overlap, is 1220 x 610mm or 48” x 24”. This dictates the pitch of the wood grounds, which should be of minimum 30 x 30mm softwood. Plywood can be added to increase rigidity and the use of building adhesive will reduce the number of nails required.
We can supply smaller nail up tiles at effective size 610 x 610mm

Because the tiles have detailed or indented borders, a decision will have to made on how to cope the tiles into corners and walls. The options are:
• Limit the extent of the tiles into a rectangular area so that no cutting is necessary. The remaining area can be a plain border with a bead over the tiles’ edge, or a drop border to form a coffered ceiling.
• Start in the centre and work out to the walls. Cut the last tiles to fit with nibbler type shears. Such shears do not jam and will not crush the detailing of the tile. If done well, this will suffice, but if gaps are evident then a small amount of filler or wood beading will disguise errors. Shadow gaps can also be considered.
• As above but using tin ceiling cornice. This requires careful planning as it does not look good overlapping a cut tile. Arrange it to butt against uncut tiles with a drop ceiling border to run through to the wall.

All tiles are usually supplied unfinished for painting on site but we are happy to quote for paint finish in any BS or RAL colour. NOTE - water based paint must NOT be used. Fire retardant paint can be applied if requested. Full fitting instructions, fire certificate details and general advice are available on request.

How do I calculate the likely cost?

Establish the area in square metres.

If the tiles are to fit a 600mm metric grid, divide the area by 0.6 twice. This will give the total number of tiles.
eg If the area is 32m² the total is 89 tiles.

If the tiles are to fit a 610mm imperial grid, divide the area by 0.61 twice. This will give the total number of tiles.
eg If the area is 42m² the total is 113 tiles.

For nail up, the tiles are size 610 x 1220mm, but we advise a 10mm overlap so divide the area by 0.59 and then by 1.2.
eg If the area is 50m² the total is 71 tiles.
