The Shelbourne Dublin, a Renaissance Hotel

Location: Dublin
Architect: Cantrell & Crowley Architects & Interior Designers

The Shelbourne Hotel is Dublin’s largest luxury five-star hotel, known affectionately by locals as the 'grande old lady'. When undergoing a reported €83 million refurbishment, a spectacular ceiling centrepiece in the hotel foyer was needed and Andy Thornton was happy to be of service.

We worked closely with the hotel’s interior designers, Cantrell & Crowley Architects, to interpret their designs for the stained glass dome, which features predominantly aquamarine and opaque glass, through to light and dark amber. In the centre is a decorative etched panel.

What makes this dome unusual from the norm is the fact that it is elliptical in shape, measuring an impressive 3300mm in length x 2500mm width. It took over a month to manufacture the dome  and four days’ installation on site.

Speaking of the finished dome, Ruth McKenna of Cantrell & Crowley Architects & Interior Designers, said, “Working with Andy Thornton Ltd was an absolute pleasure; every member of their team was efficient, professional and creative.  Given that we were trying to achieve an elliptical design - which threw up all sorts of challenges - it certainly made a huge difference to work with experts!”

Andy Thornton Ltd have 35 years experience of creating bespoke large decorative ceiling features for hotels, retail projects and private residences all over the world.
