York Tap
Location: York
Client: Pivovar Ltd (Jamie Hawksworth and John Holdsworth)
Designer: Andy Thornton Ltd
Breathing new life into an old building by restoring its original features when possible and replicating them when it isn’t is something we specialise in. Our latest pub fit-out – at the York Tap - is testament to our craftsmanship and attention to detail, as is customer Pivovar's ongoing custom and the success of Sheffield Tap, a previous project we completed for them.
Situated at York Railway Station, York Tap sells 32 draft beers and ciders and 20 cask ales and possesses much of the buildings original woodwork, cast iron columns, timber fretwork, stained glass ceiling, terrazzo floor and fireplace surrounds. All were sympathetically restored by our experienced contracts team after we were commissioned to carry out the restoration and refurbishment project, with the original features providing much of the inspiration.
As well as restoring what we could, we also designed, manufactured and installed the magnificent period-style island bar counter and back-fitting. We incorporated four existing columns into the circular bar counter, which features a panelled counter with decorative fluted columns and brass footrail. The back bar fitting includes an arched pediment with two clocks, turned columns and partition wall clad in panelling to house beer pythons.
We also made a stained glass ceiling dome to replicate an existing one and stained glass windows to replace those that could not be saved and for decorative use over the top of the entrance.
The entrance itself is adapted from a reclaimed antique revolving doorway similar to the buildings original entrance. We modified the doors to meet strict fire regulations and removed two of its doors for use elsewhere in the pub.
We also manufactured and fitted curved button back banquette seating booths, and supplied bentwood chairs and bar stools, tables, brasserie-style pendant lighting and customised bar post lights.
And as homage to the York Tap’s former existence and the inspiration for its refurbishment, the old photographs hang proudly on its walls.
