Amundsen Bryggeri & Spiseri is a large new micro-brewery in Oslo, which after a complete refurbishment, opened in time for the recent Nordic World Skiing Championships held in nearby Holmenkollen. The complete interior fit-out, in traditional style with a modern twist, was undertaken by UK based specialist refurbishment contractor Andy Thornton Ltd.
Client Tony Erik Andreassen, having found the ideal downtown site close to the National Theatre and Town Hall, wanted to open the venue in time for this important event to benefit from the huge influx of visitors. Having already worked with Andy Thornton on one of his other venues Cafe Skansen, he asked them to create the complete interior, working closely with his architect, Metropolis Arkitektur & Design.
Andy Thornton manufactured and installed the large oak 'Brunswick' bar, a replica of the famous bars built in Chicago in the early Twentieth Century. This features an imposing back bar with carved columns, between decorative etched mirrors, which were copied from an original one on site. The matching bar counter, features oak panelling with half round columns and carved rope-effect detail and brass foot rail.
Centrepiece in the venue is the Fleck Brauhaus Technik micro-brewery which is capable of brewing three different beers at one time. The impressive brewing equipment is showcased by a glazed oak screen and doors, manufactured by Andy Thornton.
The seating is a mixture of fixed booth and wall seats with leather upholstery, with high-dining bar stools and tall drinks tables in the bar area and matching armchairs with cast iron tables and timber tops in the dining area, all upholstered in rich brown leather.
The decorative lighting was also supplied by Andy Thornton. This comprises dome prismatic pendants around the bar and a mixture of prismatic inverted bowls, flush fittings and traditional brass pendants with glass shades.
The client is delighted with the new venue which provides just what he wanted, a stylish bar where he can serve good beer and simple food, using the best ingredients, served in a stylish but informal atmosphere.
