The Elton House Hotel

Location: Bramley, Nr Rotherham
Client: Beyond Hotels Ltd
Designer: Andy Thornton Ltd

The traditional Elton House Hotel in the quiet village of Bramley, four miles from Rotherham, has been recently refurbished by its new owners Claire Gurney and Jean-Marc Troit. Originally an 18th century house set in its own grounds, it offers 29 bedrooms as well as restaurant, bar and function/conference facilities for up to 100.

The main public areas, in particular the restaurant and lounge bar, were very tired and had not been refurbished for over 20 years. The brief from Mrs Gurney to Andy Thornton designer Kirsty Rider was to create elegant and comfortable surroundings to provide a memorable dining experience and cosy bar atmosphere. She wanted to attract the wedding and conference business, whilst encouraging locals to start using the facilities again. We were responsible for the full interior design and bespoke joinery package.

Tanners Restaurant, named after the local leather tannery that once occupied that part of the building, has been transformed into an exquisite dining experience. Centrepiece is an oak dresser and wine display unit manufactured by Andy Thornton. As well as displaying drinks, this versatile unit allows quick access to the main bar behind, while also converting to a breakfast servery in the mornings.

We also manufactured and installed the leather banquette seating and supplied all the restaurant tables and upholstered dining chairs, supplied in a selection of carefully co-ordinated leather colours and woven linen fabrics.

In the contemporary lounge bar, Andy Thornton manufactured a new back bar, bar top and a glass racks. In the lounge area, which features an antique fireplace, Andy Thornton supplied pub tables and chairs, cubes and lounge chairs. They also provided furniture to the conservatory area.

Since the refurbishment, the Elton House Hotel is now attracting business visitors during the week and has record new bookings for wedding receptions at weekends. It is also attracting a regular following from the locals and has built a reputation for its fine dining.
