Andy Thornton Ltd is synonymous with quality, tradition and heritage. So it is fitting that our Architectural Metalwork Department has designed, manufactured and installed an impressive new entrance and platform canopy at the Lake District’s historic Haverthwaite Station.
We are delighted to have played such an important role in the development and restoration of the station, which dates back to 1869 and is one of three stops on the picturesque Lakeside to Haverthwaite railway line running through the Leven Valley to the southern end of Lake Windermere.
Freight and passenger trains used the track for around 80 years, until it ran out of steam and closed in 1967 with the advent of cars, two world wars and a decline in industry. The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway Company Ltd brought the station back to life in 1973 to preserve local and transport history and house out of service steam and diesel engines.
It has since become a tourist attraction and boasts a restaurant and bookshop, along with a collection of classic locomotives and carriage stock. The station now also features a canopy that is perfectly suited to its period features and traditional signage and buildings. It comprises of cast aluminium railway-style columns, mild steel sections and bespoke teardrop friezes, all with a black powder coated finish. The roof consists of 6mm toughened glass panels.
The project took three months to complete from start to finish, with the canopy in place for the start of the 2011 tourist season.
Andy Thornton specialises in decorative and durable metalwork structures, such as canopies and shelters, to weather proof public attractions and eating and drinking venues. Contact Us to discuss our services further.
