21.07.2011 - Just what the doctor ordered
The Cooper Rose in Albion Place, Sunderland is one of the latest new venues to be opened by pub chain JD Wetherspoon, with Andy Thornton supplying its eclectic range of lighting. Branded a Lloyds No 1, the bar has been named after a famous vaccination doctor who lived on the street way back in the 19th Century.
Designed by Harrison Ince Architects, the Cooper Rose features decorative lighting throughout the interior, sourced exclusively from Andy Thornton. The designers have combined lighting from all periods and styles to create the desired mix of urban vintage pendants with uber-stylish mosaic fittings and elegant drum shades.
Adjacent to the bar and next to a bank of raised seating booths they have installed a run of original Dutch street lights featuring pendants in polished copper and dark green in a heavily distressed condition. These match the nautical pendants and wall lights and industrial prismatic pendants in other areas of the bar.
In the main dining area Andy Thornton was commissioned to supply large 800mm-diameter drum shades in black fabric with diffusers at the top to channel the light downwards. They also supplied the six-arm Brunswick pendants designed around mosaic cylinders, and the contemporary Ulee polycarbonate globes in copper with central crystal cascade.
