Carved oak pew

A pew of local interest, recently removed from Halifax Parish Church. A huge millstone grit mediaeval building, built in the 12th Century. The parish is justifiably proud of the woodwork within the church. The Miserere stalls in the choir date from the late 15th Century , but the masks on each side are much older. The stalls in the sanctuary are of particular fine workmanship and are thought to have come from Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, at the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. The Jacobean altar rails are stunning woodwork as are the original pews, which date from 1633. This pew itself was ordered in the Mid Victorian era, when further seating was added for the swelling congregation.
