This figure was inspired by the nymphs in the John William Waterhouse painting of "Hylas & the Nymphs" circa 1896, now in Manchester City Art Gallery. Exhibited widely, including at the Paris Exhibition of 1900. Muriel Foster (1878 -1969) posed for three of the six water nymphs in the picture including the figure on the right hand side, of which this sculpture is an interpretation.
